Vocabulary - Basic
Clip Art
How I use them.

These are all numbered pictures.

I describe a sequence of pictures. I repeat each description and allow 15 seconds for each picture. The students record the number of each picture described. At the end I write the numbers on the board for them to check their results.

Telephone numbers
How I use them.

I say the name of the business and in sequence they read out either the telephone number or item number following previously given instructions.

The whole class writes the telephone number or item number as I say the business names. I allow 15 seconds between names and say each one twice. When we have done 5 or 10, depending on the group, I write the results on the board for them to check their results.

I ask questions using the information on the sheet and they write the answer on their answer sheet. I check they are all correct before going on to the next question. Examples of questions are:

Telephone Numbers Basic 02

"Who lives at 22 Tenth Street?"

"Who has a height of 138 cm and a weight of 28 kg?"

"Who has a father called Tim and a mother called Wendy?"

Telephone Numbers Basic 03

"Who lives in Orange?"

"Who has a father called Nick and a mother called Julie?"

"Who was born on the twenty second of May, nineteen seventy four?"

"Who answers the door in Limerick if, when you knock on it, they say "My son has gone fishing with his father"?"

"You knock on a door in Dubbo. Who are you talking to if they say, "My parents have gone to the zoo."?"

Some Chemistry
How I use it.

I say the names of the elements and in sequence they tell me the symbol, element number or word from the ditty.

With better students I say a number, ditty word or symbol and they say the element name.

I say 5 or 10 elements and they write down the symbol or number. At the end I write the results on the board for them to check their results.

Television Programmes

How I use them.

I say the name of a program and they have to give the channel, time, and whether it is AM or PM. This is done going around the class person by person or as a competition with the class divided into three or four groups, the first correct response getting a score for their group. With weaker groups I ask the questions only from one channel at a time. If the whole class is responding on paper I also ask from only one channel at a time. In this case they have ten questions; two from each channel; and each question is said twice with 15 seconds between questions. At the end the answers are written on the board and they check their own. The idea is to promote competition against themselves and self improvement. Some cheat of course.

Map Exercises
How I use them.

I ask them questions about the map and they respond individually as I go around the class or collectively on paper and then check their own answers which I write on the board. The top of the page is north, so one type of question is: "What is to the east of XXXX". We do enough of north, south, east and west for them to all get the point. I get three of them at the front, go over BETWEEN, and then ask questions such as: "What business is between XXX and YYYY." We go over "across the road, across the street, opposite" as being the same and then ask questions off the map.

I get them to describe the directions they would need to give a person to get from one business to another.
